Loops ao redor de Pretoriuskop, Mestel Dam Road (S7) e Shabeni Road (S10)

Após nos alojarmos em Pretoriuskop, ainda foi possível aproveitar a tarde do dia 3 de janeiro para passear ao redor do campo. Nos loops ao redor de Pretoriuskop, vimos dois francolins de Natal (Natal Francolin, Pternistes natalensis) e um grupo de Impalas (Aepyceros melampus), os quais fotografamos, mas sem resultados que valeram muito a pena, e mais um mangusto-anão, não fotografado. Seguimos então para o norte pela Mestel Dam Road (S7), percorrendo em seguida a Shabeni Road (S10), contornando um pequeno monte, bastante característico do relevo do local, Shabeni Hill. After housing in Pretoriuskop, it was still possible to enjoy the afternoon of January 3rd to travel around the camp. In the loops around Pretoriuskop, we saw two Natal Francolins (Pternistes natalensis) and a group of Impalas (Aepyceros melampus), which we photographed, but with not really worthy results, and another dwarf mongoose, not photographed. We followed then to the north by the Mestel Dam Road (S7) and the Shabeni Road (S10), around a small mount, very characteristic of the relief in the place, Shabeni Hill. Na Mestel Dam Road, vimos apenas uma pequena tartaruga (terrapin) e uma viúva (widow), que não identificamos nem fotografamos. Na Shabeni Road, vimos um belo macho de impala, que pode ser observado na foto abaixo. Há cerca de 150.000 impalas no Kruger. Logo, é muito comum vê-las no parque, mas são animais tão belos e, na época em que fomos, havia tantos filhotes, que não nos cansávamos de vê-las. Aliás, se, por um lado, nos meses de inverno, com o ambiente mais seco, a visualização de animais é mais fácil, por outro lado no verão, mesmo com o tempo mais chuvoso, há a vantagem de que há muitos filhotes, que são uma atração à parte, e as aves migratórias estão presentes. Não tivemos, além disso, qualquer dificuldade de avistar animais. Víamos tranquilamente mais de 100 animais por dia, sem exceção de qualquer dia de nossa estada.

In the Mestel Dam Road, we saw a small terrapin and a widow, which we neither identified nor photographed. In the Shabeni Road, we saw a beautiful male Impala, which can be observed in the picture below.There are approximately 150,000 impalas in the Kruger. Thus, they are commonly seen in the park, but they are so beautiful and, when we were there, there were so many newborns, that we never got tired of seeing them. Moreover, if, on the one hand, in winter, with the drier environment, it is easier to see animals, on the other hand in summer, even with the wet season, there is the advantage that there are many newborns, which are an attraction in themselves, and the migrstory birds are present. Besides, we did not experience any difficulty in seeing animals. We easily saw more than a hundred animals per day, with no exception during our period in the park.

Este macho ficou em estado de alerta ao nosso lado, mas em geral os animais ficavam, após um momento inicial de alerta ou freezing, relativamente tranquilos e comportando-se próximo da normalidade perto do carro. Brincávamos que era uma fauna que usava Lexotan, bem diferente do comportamento usualmente (compreensivelmente) arredio de animais diante da presença humana. A aproximação dos animais é muito mais fácil do que imaginávamos. Isso resultava com frequência em boas fotografias. É sempre importante aproximar-se com cuidado e calma, no entanto, procurando não perturbar demais os animais. É fundamental sempre respeitar as normas dos parques. Isso é realmente essencial para a conservação da fauna e flora.

This male stayed alert besides us, but in general the animals stayed relatively calm after an initial moment of alert or freezing, behaving close to normality, not far away from the car. We joked that this was a fauna that used Lexotan, quite different from the usually (understandably) nervous behavior shown by animals when humans are present. To approach the animals was much easier than we imagined. This often resulted in good photographs. It always important, however, to approach carefully and calmly, seeking not to disturb the animals too much. It is fundamental to always respect the park rules. This is really essential for fauna and flora conservation.
